Richmond, VA – This afternoon, the House Appropriations Committee voted to advance H.B. 1090, a bill to gut funding for comprehensive reproductive health care and restrict access to safe, legal abortion for Virginia women.
H.B. 1090, sponsored by Delegate Ben Cline, would defund the Commonwealth’s comprehensive women’s health centers, including Virginia’s six Planned Parenthood centers. Although the bill’s original language prohibited the Department of Health from granting funds to, or entering into contracts with, any health care provider that performs abortion, it was amended in subcommittee to exempt hospitals and instead single out Virginia women’s health centers.
“This bill is a purely political attack on Virginia women and families,” said Tarina Keene, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. “Regardless of how we personally feel about abortion, I hope we can all agree that Virginia women deserve access to safe, high-quality, and comprehensive medical care – the kind provided everyday by Virginia women’s health centers, including Planned Parenthood.
With their vote today, Virginia’s anti-women legislators have made it clear that their top priority is continuing to attack women’s rights and restrict access to critical health care. As this bill advances to the House floor, I remind every legislator that 7 in 10 Virginians support legal access to safe, legal abortion – and they are paying attention. Access to health care for thousands of Virginia women and their families is at stake here.”
