Alexandria, Va. May 9, 2019 – NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is proud to endorse reproductive rights champion Delegate Kathy Tran, who represents Virginia’s 42nd House District.
Delegate Tran came to the United States as a boat refugee from Vietnam and is one of the first Asian American women to serve in the Virginia General Assembly. As a proud mother of four children she has been a strong reproductive rights advocate in the General Assembly since she was elected to the House of Delegates in 2017, representing the values of the majority – 72%– of Virginians who believe that a woman should have the ability to make her own personal reproductive healthcare decisions.
“NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is proud to endorse Delegate Kathy Tran, who is a staunch defender of and advocate for reproductive freedom in Virginia. Delegate Tran will never stop standing up and fighting for women and families across Virginia, and at this critical juncture in Virginia, we need her leadership in the General Assembly,” said Tarina Keene, executive director at NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia.
“I’m honored to be endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia and share their commitment to protecting women’s access to reproductive healthcare,” said Delegate Kathy Tran. “Women’s health is under assault across the country as anti-choice politicians try to pass new restrictions on abortion and reproductive health care. I look forward to working with NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia to hold this seat and flip control of the House of Delegates so medical decisions are made by a woman and her doctor, and not politicians in Richmond.”
With Roe v. Wade hanging by a tenuous thread and anti-choice politicians launching vicious attacks on abortion care, including an outright ban on abortion, reproductive freedom will be front and center during the 2019 election cycle. That is why NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is grateful to have a courageous leader like Delegate Tran in Richmond, who women and families know they can count on to defend, protect and advance their rights. Delegate Tran trusts women to make their own personal healthcare decisions and understands the critical importance of access to high-quality, compassionate, reproductive healthcare.
Earlier this year, anti-choice politicians in Virginia launched a disinformation campaign in an attempt to misrepresent needed legislation to expand access to reproductive freedom for Virginia women and families. The fact is, their real agenda is about banning abortion with no exceptions. That’s wrong. These politicians are overstepping their role, and women and families don’t deserve to pay the price.
Delegate Tran is a champion for all Virginians, especially the most underserved members of our communities – young, rural, low-income women, and women of color – who are often disproportionately impacted when their access to healthcare is threatened or out of reach.
