Alexandria, Va. May 14, 2019 – NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is proud to endorse reproductive rights champion Senator Dick Saslaw, who represents Virginia’s 35th Senate District.
Throughout Democratic Minority Leader Senator Saslaw’s career, he has been a steadfast leader in fighting the nonstop attacks on our reproductive health and rights. The reproductive rights movement is facing the most unprecedented threats to abortion access since the passage of Roe v. Wade, from the White House to a majority anti-choice controlled Virginia General Assembly, and we need Senate Minority Leader Saslaw’s leadership to secure a future that safeguards our most basic rights to abortion care for all Virginians.
“At a time when our most fundamental rights are under attack like never before across this country, we are confident that Virginia Senate Minority Leader Dick Saslaw will never back down when it comes to protecting and expanding access to reproductive health and rights for all Virginians. Senate Minority Leader Dick Saslaw has and will put the needs of Virginia women and their families first as they make personal decisions about when, if, how, and with whom to start a family. He is a proven champion and a trusted defender in the face of constant attempts to restrict access to the full gamut of reproductive healthcare by anti-choice politicians in the Virginia State Senate,” said Tarina Keene, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia.
“I am thrilled to receive the endorsement of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia,” said Senate Minority Leader Dick Saslaw. “I trust a woman to make her own medical decisions and know that it is plain wrong for a politician to interfere in a woman’s ability to make her own personal healthcare decisions. In 2019, and beyond, Virginia will and must be a place where a woman’s bodily autonomy is protected, instead of intentionally misrepresented by anti-choice politicians who have resorted to lies at the expense of women and families, just to score political points. As a leader in the Virginia State Senate, I will prioritize repealing the politically motivated, medically unnecessary laws on the books that are designed to prevent Virginians from accessing healthcare and will work to pass legislation that codifies Roe v. Wade into the Virginia code, so that Virginians will no longer have to worry about the federal government’s attempts to undermine and strip their fundamental, constitutional, right to safe and legal abortion,” commented Senate Minority Leader Dick Saslaw.
Sen. Sasalw’s primary opponent, Yasmine Taeb, received a 100% score on NPCV PAC’s uncompromising candidate questionnaire. She also briefly served on NPCV’s board of directors. If elected, we are confident that she would be a strong advocate for reproductive freedom in the General Assembly. We look forward to working with her in the future.
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia and its PAC support candidates who are dedicated to family planning, preventing unintended pregnancy, and increasing access to reproductive healthcare for women and families. The organization’s powerful statewide network of 22,000 activists will mobilize pro-choice voters throughout Virginia to help elect pro-choice candidates in November.
