Alexandria, Va. – NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is proud to endorse reproductive rights advocate Amanda Pohl in the race for Virginia’s 11th Senate District. Pohl is ready to help end the anti-choice strangle-hold on the state Senate that consistently works to advance an anti-reproductive freedom, anti-family legislative agenda intended to shut off access to safe, legal abortion.
Amanda received a 100% score on the NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia PAC’s candidate questionnaire and supports protecting access to reproductive freedom in the Commonwealth. Amanda is the Data Systems and Evaluation Director of the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance, and she is working to build a Virginia that connects survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence with transformative healing resources, including full access to healthcare.
“NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is proud to endorse Amanda Pohl for state Senate,” said Tarina Keene, executive director at NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. “Amanda trusts a woman to make her own reproductive healthcare decisions and understands how a lack of access to abortion impacts people around the Commonwealth. Amanda knows firsthand how the medically unnecessary barriers to reproductive healthcare put in place by anti-choice politicians personally affected her at a time when she experienced a miscarriage.”
“When Amanda Pohl was pregnant with her third planned pregnancy, she experienced a miscarriage,” commented Tarina Keene. “Due to the medically unnecessary restrictions put in place by anti-abortion politicians, Amanda was unable to receive the timely and compassionate reproductive healthcare she needed. These barriers included a 24-hour waiting period, mandatory ultrasound, and biased counseling. This experience opened Amanda’s eyes up to how anti-choice politicians in Virginia had chipped away at her access to reproductive health and rights for decades, and how these laws are insulting and dangerous to all Virginia women. A woman should be able to make her own healthcare decisions free from political interference.”
Amanda Pohl’s opponent, Sen. Amanda Chase who currently represents Senate District 11, is an anti-abortion, anti-woman legislator who does not support a woman’s right to make her own personal healthcare decisions and often makes demeaning and dangerous comments concerning a woman’s safety and her rights. Most recently in June, Sen. Amanda Chase made a controversial comment concerning the second amendment and wrote that “It’s those who are naive and unprepared that end up raped.” Also, as a member of the Senate Health & Education Committee, she commented during a hearing in 2018 that if a woman becomes pregnant as a result of rape, abortion is never the answer. Furthermore, if the incident involved her son, he should have to take parental responsibility by paying child support and helping to raise the child – not face prosecution or jail. Sen. Chase’s consistent anti-woman, anti-healthcare hateful rhetoric and voting record has no place in Virginia.
“I’m proud to have NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia’s endorsement,” said Amanda Pohl. “A mother of two girls, I have always been a staunch advocate for women’s reproductive healthcare and rights, and now that we are seeing even more ridiculous attacks on women like the recently passed extremist anti-abortion laws in Alabama and Georgia, I know we need to stand up and speak out for women and families. I will fight for a future where my daughters and all our children have the ability and freedom to control their own destinies by ensuring their access to the full range of reproductive health services.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia and its PAC support candidates who are dedicated to family planning, preventing unplanned pregnancy, and increasing access to reproductive healthcare for women and families. The organization’s powerful statewide network of 22,000 members and activists will mobilize pro-choice voters throughout Virginia to help elect pro-choice candidates in November.
