Alexandria, Va – A statement from NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Executive Director Tarina Keene:

While this might not be the outcome we hoped for, we acknowledge a fight well fought by all of our endorsed statewide candidates. Each of them is a champion of reproductive freedom, and we know they will continue to do their part to ensure Virginians will have full access to their rights and to abortion care.

Former Governor Terry McAuliffe and Delegate Hala Ayala ran strategic, values-driven campaigns, and we were honored to stand with them during this hard-fought election. We are proud of our members, volunteers, and partners who rallied in support of our shared vision for a better, more equitable Commonwealth.

NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia thanks each candidate for stepping up to run on a reproductive freedom platform, their collaboration, and their leadership on advancing reproductive healthcare access in the Commonwealth. We know they will continue to work with us in their new capacities because they intimately understand what is at stake.

We are thrilled that many of our endorsed House candidates won their races, and we are still closely monitoring the races of Debra Gardner HD 27, Delegate Lashrecse Aird HD63, Delegate Alex Askew HD85, Delegate Martha Mugler HD91, as well as Mark Herring’s Attorney General race. With Roe on the chopping block, we must do all we can to protect abortion access and rights, and we know these newly elected officials are committed to making it happen.

These results will test the limits of Virginia’s ability to protect abortion access. The fight will be long and hard, but now is not the time to give up. In fact, this is the time that we dig our heels in and get to work. We will not allow this loss to take away the progress that Virginians have worked so diligently to gain. We won’t stop until every person in the Commonwealth has access to affordable reproductive healthcare.

Our small but mighty team is proud of every door we knocked on and every call we made on behalf of the pro-choice ticket, and the support we gathered for each candidate. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia knocked on more than 8,000 doors, made 12,493 phone calls, sent more than 20,000 mail pieces, and reached 598,610 people through digital ads and social media. The next phase of our work begins today as we prepare our policy agenda for the 2022 General Assembly session and the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on the future of Roe v. Wade. No matter what happens, we will continue to be undeterred until our rights, freedoms, and access to abortion care and the full gamut of reproductive healthcare are secured and unencumbered.
