Applications are now open for the 2021 – 2022 academic year!
Who we are: NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia (an independent state affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America) is dedicated to building and sustaining a constituency that uses the state-level political process to guarantee reproductive freedom for all, including family planning, sexuality education, maternal health care, and safe, legal abortion. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is a grassroots 501(c)(4) organization, with a 501(c)(3) Foundation arm and a political action committee (PAC).
EDUCATE: We keep Virginia’s public, policymakers, and media awake and aware.
ADVOCATE: We’re the voice of pro-choice Virginians and we lobby hard to make our voices heard in the General Assembly.
ORGANIZE: We build a grassroots network across the Commonwealth that’s ready to take action and growing every day.
ELECT: We change the balance of power by electing lawmakers who share our values—and raise the alarm on those who don’t.
Why this Fellowship: NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is offering an exclusive, yearlong fellowship opportunity to driven, passionate students ready to join the ranks of Virginia’s pro-choice champions. Our program develops next-generation leaders with the skills and support they need to make change on their campus and in Virginia.
The Student Advocacy Fellowship works with students through the fall semester, winter break, and spring semester through a series of educational modules with the ongoing mentorship of our Community Organizers. Our fellows tap into the knowledge and resources only those on the frontlines can bring—we work with guest speakers, activists, policy makers, and grassroots organizations to share their unique expertise. Students complete on-campus organizing activities to apply what they’ve learned, with the skills of each module building on the next. Topics covered in our modules include:
- Grassroots Organizing
- Elections and Campaigns
- Careers in Advocacy
Prior to graduation, our fellows build an advocacy campaign of their very own to create change on campus. From lobbying for expanded access to contraceptives on campus to raising awareness about local fake clinics, our fellows see first-hand what it’s like to build power and progress with the support of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia.
Our fellows also receive a $1,000 stipend per semester to compensate them for their work.
Eligibility: The Student Advocacy Fellowship is open to undergraduate sophomores, juniors, and seniors enrolled at a Virginia public or private university. Two fellowship positions are open at each university unless otherwise specified. Fellows commit to 6 – 8 hours work per week outside of their trainings in the fall and spring semesters, and 2 – 4 hours per week over winter break.
To Apply: Applicants must submit an online application and resume no later than June 15, 2021 for consideration in the 2021-2022 cohort. Applications are considered on a rolling basis. Students can also be nominated online.
We are committed to an equitable, socially just, and welcoming work environment. We are an equal opportunity employer and people of color, people with disabilities, and people of all sexual orientations and genders are especially encouraged to apply.
